Some seven subspecies of the Caribbean Elaenia are recognized across the species’ scattered West Indies range, which principally is centered on the Lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico, but also encompasses islands of southeast Mexico, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua, the Caymans, and the southern Netherlands Antilles. Everywhere, the Caribbean Elaenia is usually common, and is found in the canopy and borders of lowland evergreen forest, as well as in gardens, scrub, and mangroves. It usually forages in pairs, searching for both insects and fruit. The species’ most obvious plumage feature is the two broad pale wing bars; the underparts are largely pale, and the rest of the upperparts are brownish olive. Enjoy!!! |
