One of the most recognized and photographed man made structures on Mount Desert Island is the arched wooden foot bridge in Somesville that sits next to the historic Selectmen’s Building - C. 1780. The bridge stands out so much that the view on the opposite side of the road, revealing Somes Harbor with Cadillac Mountain as the backdrop, can sometimes be missed. Enjoy!!! Established in 1808, West Quoddy Lighthouse is noteworthy in several ways. Despite its name, it is the easternmost beacon in the United States, one of only two U.S. lighthouses with red-and-white bands, and one of the first stations to be equipped with a fog bell and, later, a steam whistle. During our visit to Acadia National Park we stayed in the Bar Harbor Area. We wanted to visit this lighthouse so we took the two hour drive to Lubec. During the road trip we traveled through the back roads of Maine and saw a really beautiful side of the State. Enjoy!!! West Quoddy Head LighthouseThis one I took while on a 6 AM flight from San Juan to JFK, New York. The conditions were perfect...we just cleared some clouds during the initial ascent to reach cruising altitude. Also, I was sitting on the right side of the aircraft and was lucky enough to see the sunrise. I shot this one with a 50mm lens with no filters attached to the lens, and that's the reason you can see a lot of sun flares that makes a pretty dramatic "sun explosion". Enjoy!!! Sunrise ExplosionThe cliffside Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Acadia National Park, located in the village of Bass Harbor within Tremont, Maine in the United States, marks the entrance to Bass Harbor on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island. The lighthouse was built of brick in 1858 on a stone foundation, stands 56 feet above mean high water. Bass Harbor Head Light |
