Flowers don't worry about how they're going to bloom. They just open up and turn toward the light and that makes them beautiful. ~Jim Carrey Enjoy!!! The peacock (also known as peafowl) is a medium sized bird most closely related to the pheasant. Unlike it's common pheasant cousin that inhabits areas of the Northern Hemisphere, the peacock is found in warmer climate of the Southern Hemisphere, with the peacock being most commonly found in India. The male peacock is most well known for it's enormous tail feathers that fan out behind the peacock and can be nearly two meters in length. This colourful display of the peacock is thought to be used for both mating and defence purposes. The male peacock attracts a female to mate with by showing off his array of elaborate feathers, and when the male peacock feels threatened, he will fan his tail out in order to make himself look bigger and therefore try to intimidate approaching predators. Pavo RealPuerto Rican Spindalis has black head, with two conspicuous white stripes, one as long supercilium extending to the nape, and the other from the lower base of the bill, as malar stripe. Chin and throat are black, with vertical yellow-orange stripe in the centre, joining the breast. Nape shows an orange half-collar, joining the white malar stripe. Enjoy!!! Reinita MoraThe red-tailed hawk is one of the most common large, broad-winged hawks in North America. Its range is from Alaska and northern Canada south to Central America. Red-tailed hawks live in a variety of habitats: open country, scrub, woodlands, rocky canyons, coastlines, prairies and deserts. Like all raptors, they are carnivores. Red-tailed Hawks are most often seen soaring high above the ground, looking for food. They are very difficult to identify unless they come closer to the earth. This raptor grows up to 25 inches long and can weigh up to four pounds (heavy for a bird; remember, they have hollow bones!). Its wingspan can reach four feet. Red-tailed Hawks are large, stocky birds. They are brown with a white breast and a rust-colored tail. If you can get close enough, the tail is the best way to identify them. Young Red-tailed Hawks are more dull in color, have more streaks, and are missing the red in their tails. Enjoy!!! TerritorialThe Scaly-naped Pigeon is common and widespread throughout the Caribbean except for Jamaica and the Bahamas, where it does not occur. This species is large and distinctive within its range, showing purple-red plumage, with pale buff scaly edges to the nape feathers. The Scaly-naped Pigeon is common throughout a variety of forested habitats at most elevations. It is generally most common in intact primary lowland and montane forest, but can be seen along a variety of forest edge and secondary forest types. Enjoy!!!
